Give A Drop is a partnership between Project Clean Water, Virgin Unite, and the Voss Foundation to address the worldwide water problem.
Show you care.
Give A Drop.
Give A Drop supports water projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, implemented by the Voss Foundation and on-the-ground partners. Our first joint venture is in the village of Pel in Dogon, Mali, aided locally by AED and Caritas.
The project entails rehabilitating 5 boreholes, transforming them into modern, efficient, secure hygienic wells. The entire village will be trained in techniques of hygiene, treatment of water, maintenance and management of wells. Ultimately, a management committee will take responsibility for each well.
A local study will determine the most conservative methods of irrigation to ensure responsible water use and sustainability. Once the study is complete we will execute the best practices in an agricultural nursery of a local women’s group. The nursery provides both a source of income for the women and healthful food for the entire community. The Pel women’s group is especially remarkable: they have banded together to raise money through self-sustained activities such as municipal sanitation, composting, self-education, maternal support groups, and this vegetable garden, to form their own micro-financing savings-and-loan cooperative.
The Dogon civilization is one of the most ancient in Africa. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the region already had limited access to water but has been greatly affected by recent climate change.

About Project Clean Water
In 1997, recording artist, author, and philanthropist Jewel founded Project Clean Water. The non-profit charity foundation is working to improve the quality of life for millions of people by helping to provide clean water on a global scale. The foundation targets villages around the world with clean water problems, and works with the communities to find sustainable solutions to provide them with safe drinking water. To date, Project Clean Water has helped more than 30 communities overcome their individual drinking water problems in 13 different countries, on five different continents.
“I’m very excited that Project Clean Water has formed a partnership with the Voss Foundation and Virgin Unite to help people in need,” says Jewel. “When I was homeless, I became ill and couldn’t afford to buy the bottled water I needed for my sick kidneys. I realized then that it was hard to get clean drinking water in the United States, and discovered it was a huge problem globally.”
About Virgin Unite
Virgin Unite is the non-profit foundation of the Virgin Group. We unite people to tackle tough social and environmental problems in an entrepreneurial way. Our aim is to help revolutionize the way businesses and the social sector work together -- driving business as a force for good. This is based on the belief that this is the only way we can tackle the scale and urgency of the challenges facing the world today. Virgin Unite’s overheads are covered by Sir Richard Branson and the Virgin Group, meaning that 100% of donations received go direct to the frontline where they are needed most.
“Virgin Unite has had the pleasure of working with Jewel for a number of years,” says Jean Oelwang, Virgin Unite CEO. “We’ve been impressed by her long commitment to getting clean water to communities all over the world and are excited by this wonderful partnership with the Voss Foundation. Virgin Unite will be working with both partners and the communities to look at entrepreneurial approaches to scale solutions to deliver the basic human right of clean water.”
About Voss Foundation
The Voss Foundation is dedicated to providing access to pure, clean drinking water to Sub-Saharan African communities. The Voss Foundation employs a unique approach, which ensures local ownership and long-term sustainability through partnerships with trusted local organizations, use of appropriate technology and through systems that address the multiple water needs of a community. The Voss Foundation’s primary targets are women and children, with special focus on adolescent girls -- an often overlooked and under-serviced demographic that is particularly at risk.
“The Voss Foundation is thrilled to have the support of Jewel, Project Clean Water, and Virgin Unite,” says Kara Gerson, Voss Foundation’s Executive Director. “Together we will be able to bring clean drinking water and all the associated health and societal benefits to so many more African communities. Access to clean water is literally vital to a productive and meaningful life.”
